William Kentridge

William Kentridge (b. 1955, Johannesburg) is a South African artist whose multidisciplinary practice combines drawing, animation, film, sculpture, printmaking, performance, theatre, and opera. His work is deeply connected to the political and social history of South Africa, particularly apartheid, colonialism, inequality, memory, and the ways history is constructed and remembered. Kentridge is especially known for animated films created through a distinctive process of repeatedly drawing, erasing, and redrawing charcoal images on the same sheet of paper. Traces of previous states remain visible, turning change and uncertainty into part of the image itself. Across his practice, literature, music, science, politics, theatre, and art history intersect within a visual language centered on fragmentation, transformation, and the instability of historical narratives.
