The Studio as Mind | The Artistic World of William Kentridge In this video, we explore the artistic world of William Kentridge, the acclaimed artist from Johannesburg, South Africa—an artist whose work is deeply intertwined with history, politics, and collective memory. More than a painter or animator, Kentridge is a thinker and explorer of history, whose visual language has been profoundly shaped by the lived experience of apartheid. This video focuses on The Natural History of the Studio, presented at Hauser & Wirth New York—Kentridge’s first major solo exhibition to place the process of creation, the studio, and the artist’s mind at its very center. From his charcoal animations and the technique of erasure and redrawing to the episodic film series Self-Portrait as a Coffee-Pot, the exhibition offers a comprehensive view of Kentridge’s visual language, his embrace of ambiguity, and his way of thinking through images.
