Van Gogh Museum Opened 1973 · Amsterdam, Netherlands The Van Gogh Museum opened in Amsterdam in 1973 and houses the world’s largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh. Its holdings include more than two hundred paintings, around five hundred drawings, more than eight hundred letters, and extensive archival material related to the artist’s life and practice. The collection also includes works by Van Gogh’s contemporaries, artists who influenced him, and later artists inspired by his work, alongside significant collections of nineteenth-century prints and Japanese ukiyo-e. The museum’s main building on Museumplein was designed by Gerrit Rietveld, with an exhibition wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa. The Van Gogh Museum also manages The Mesdag Collection in The Hague.
