Lisa Yuskavage

American · b. 1962

Lisa Yuskavage (b. 1962, Philadelphia) is an American artist whose distinctive approach to figurative painting explores sexuality, fantasy, intimacy, identity, and the act of looking. Her paintings often depict invented female figures within dreamlike interiors and landscapes, combining exaggerated bodies with sophisticated treatments of light, atmosphere, and colour. Drawing from Renaissance and Baroque painting, popular culture, photography, and contemporary imagery, Yuskavage creates compositions in which figuration and abstraction operate together. Colour plays a central structural and emotional role throughout her work. Since the 1990s, her provocative and technically accomplished paintings have contributed significantly to contemporary debates around the female body, representation, desire, and the possibilities of figurative painting.
