The Figure's Comeback: How the "Circa 1995" Painters Saved Painting | David Zwirner

From the exhibition

Circa 1995

David Zwirner · 7 May – 16 July 2025

"Was Figurative Painting Dead? Not So Fast! " In the 1990s, with the rise of Conceptual Art and large-scale installations, many critics declared the end of painting. But in the heart of New York, a group of young, radical artists found a new way to revive the human figure on canvas. In this in-depth analytical video, we take you inside the stunning exhibition "Circa 1995: New Figuration in New York" at David Zwirner Gallery. We examine how eight seminal artists—John Currin, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Chris Ofili, Laura Owens, Elizabeth Peyton, Luc Tuymans, and Lisa Yuskavage—shattered clichés by blending academic techniques with provocative, contemporary subjects. What you will discover in this video: How John Currin challenged the boundaries of beauty with his sexualized, Kitsch portraits. Elizabeth Peyton's intimate approach to portraiture, capturing the soul of celebrities and historical figures. The unsettling and ambiguous space of Luc Tuymans’ paintings engaging with dark history. Marlene Dumas’ fluid, psychological explorations of the human body. Chris Ofili's multi-layered techniques using unconventional materials (like elephant dung!). Laura Owens' experimental explorations that break the material limits of painting. Peter Doig's atmospheric, melancholic, and dreamlike landscapes. And Lisa Yuskavage's bold examinations of femininity and the female form. This exhibition is more than a historical retrospective; it is a testament to the power of transformation and the evolution of figurative painting. How did these artists write the future of the canvas and prove that the human figure can never truly be removed from art? Watch the video now and share your thoughts in the comments below!
