Circa 1995

Circa 1995: New Figuration in New York brought together eight artists who played a major role in the resurgence of figurative painting during the 1990s: John Currin, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Chris Ofili, Laura Owens, Elizabeth Peyton, Luc Tuymans, and Lisa Yuskavage. The exhibition revisited a moment when painting was being reassessed alongside the growing prominence of photography, video, and installation. Drawing from key works and exhibitions of the decade, it showed how these artists renewed portraiture, landscape, figuration, and narrative through highly individual approaches to image, material, subject matter, and art history.
