Luc Tuymans

Luc Tuymans (b. 1958, Mortsel) is a Belgian artist whose distinctive approach to figurative painting has had a major influence on contemporary painting since the 1990s. Working primarily from pre-existing images drawn from photographs, film, television, newspapers, and digital media, he transforms familiar visual material through muted colour, cropping, blur, and reduced detail. His paintings frequently address history, memory, political power, colonialism, violence, and the reliability of images. Subjects have ranged from the Holocaust and Belgium’s colonial history in Congo to contemporary politics and seemingly ordinary objects. Through deliberately restrained surfaces and ambiguous imagery, Tuymans examines how images shape collective memory and how historical events are mediated, reproduced, and remembered.
