Peter Doig

British · b. 1959

Peter Doig (b. 1959, Edinburgh) is a British painter whose atmospheric landscapes and figurative scenes explore memory, place, photography, cinema, and the experience of seeing. Drawing from personal photographs, film stills, postcards, album covers, art history, and remembered landscapes, Doig constructs images that move between observed reality and imagination. Canada, Trinidad, and the United Kingdom have all provided recurring subjects throughout his career. His paintings are distinguished by layered surfaces, unusual colour relationships, reflections, screens of vegetation, and figures that often appear isolated within expansive environments. Since emerging in the 1990s, Doig has become one of the most influential painters of his generation, revitalizing landscape and figurative painting through a deeply personal and psychologically charged visual language.
